smbix?

Post by Steve Randolp » Tue, 03 Oct 1995 04:00:00

Has anyone heard of a product called smbix?  I believe it is used to
facilitate dos-to-unix connections in a netware environment.  Who makes it?
Any internet resources?

Thanks,
Steve

It's called Samba!!!  Here is part of the readme file.

This is version 1.8 of Samba, the free SMB client and server for unix.

This software is freely distributable under the GNU public license, a
copy of which you should have received with this software (in a file
called COPYING).

FTP SITE
--------

The main anonymous ftp distribution site for this software is
nimbus.anu.edu.au in the directory pub/tridge/samba/.

MAILING LIST
------------

There is a mailing list for discussion of Samba. To subscribe send

Your Name"

There is also an announcement mailing list where I announce new

a body of "subscribe samba-announce Your Name". All announcements also
go to the samba list.

NEWS GROUP
----------

You might also like to look at the usenet news group
comp.protocols.smb as it often contains lots of useful info and is
frequented by lots of Samba users. The newsgroup was initially setup
by people on the Samba mailing list. It is not, however, exclusive to
Samba, it is a forum for discussing the SMB protocol (which Samba
implements).

WEB SITE
--------

A Samba WWW site has been setup with lots of useful info. Connect to:

It is maintained by Paul Blackman (thanks Paul!). You can contact him

Samba

A LanManager(R)-compatible server suite for Unix

created by
Andrew Tridgell

with help from the 'Net!

Introduction

The Samba suite is a set of programs which run under the Unix
operating system. These programs deliver most of the important
functionality of a Microsoft Lan Manager server. That is, they support
remote access to Unix filespace and Unix printers from Lan Manager
compatible clients. In practical terms, this means that such clients
can connect to and use Unix filespace as if it was a local disk drive,
or Unix printers as if they were local printers.

Some of the most popular Lan Manager compatible clients include Lan
Manager itself, Windows for Workgroups, OS/2 and Windows NT.

Using the smbclient program (part of the suite) under Unix, it is also
possible to mount the filespace and printer services available on
other Lan Manager compatible servers and access them from Unix.

This document is mainly aimed at helping you understand and install
the Samba suite under Unix, but there is a section at the end on
installing clients.

I hate to bust everybody's bubble here, but isn't "smbix" SCO's product
for connecting LANMAN client PC's to SCO UNIX servers?  I seem to recall
reading about it a few years back.  Unlike Samba which uses TCP/IP, smbix
included a NETBIOS protocol transport.  It spoke native MesS-NET.

Unfortunately for the poster, this is apparently not what he was looking
for.  He was looking for Netware to UNIX connectivity, and we all know the
answer to that.  Check "UNIX Review" magazine for third party Netware on
top of UNIX server software. One would assume that Novell would be able
to provide this service on Unixware, but they are either unable or
unwilling to do it......

Nope.  SCO has never had a product with a name anything like that.
SCO's first LANMAN-compatible product was Xenix-Net.  Later we've had a
series of products for Unix with names that are variations on "Microsoft
LAN Manager [Client | Server] for SCO Unix systems".

There's SAMBA, which is a freely distributable LANMAN client/server
implementation for Unix-like OSes.

I think I've heard the name "smbix" before; perhaps it's another
commercial product.

Why this old canard again?  The product is going to enter beta soon, and
is due for shipping by early next year.  By then, it'll be sold and
supported by SCO, and it's codename so far is "Eiger", or, if you want,
UnixWare 2.1.

The main point is that the expectations customers have of "NetWare on UNIX"
are different when both the NetWare and the UNIX are Novell's.  Hence it
took a bit over two years (from the purchase of USL to now) to get it
going.  This wasn't hobbled together, you know:  It had strict performance
targets (in terms of a certain performance percentage of native NetWare --
and not a trivial one either!), and is not a "get us something that sort-of
does the job" product.

I just went and dug out my ISC UNIX manuals, working on a hunch that
"-ix" = Interactive.

It is/was Interactive's product with the similar function, SMB/ix,
licensed from Micro Computer Systems, Inc.  Well, to the original poster,
here's a start......

Sorry about the SCO sidetrack.  I was researching both products a few
years back, actually many years ago, and didn't buy either.
