HELP: hostname.leo; hostname files

Post by Duane Donnelly-Morriso » Tue, 11 Mar 1997 04:00:00

I'm interested in creating two files: /etc/hostname.leo, and
/etc/hostname.  Could anyone assist me with what should be in these two
files?

        IP Address      Hostname   (?), or
        Hostname        IP Address  (?)

And, so on...

thank you for your assistance.
Please feel free to respond directly to my Email address:

Duane.

In /etc/hostname.le0, you only want one entry.  The name of your host.
No IP address or anything else.  The purpose of this file is to
configure your network interface during the boot process.

In /etc/hosts (I'm not sure what /etc/hostname is), you want to have IP
address/hostname pairs.  For example:

192.9.200.1             beavis                  #Insert comments here.
192.9.200.2             butthead                #Insert comments here.
192.9.200.2             stewart   winger        #Insert comments here.

In the 3rd line, the machine's official host name is stewart, but is
also known as winger.

Whoops.  The IP address in the 3rd line should have been 192.9.200.3.

First, the proper name is hostname.le0 (with a zero and not the letter).
I should contain the hostname of the le0 interface.  The /etc/hosts
file will provide the IP address to correspond with this name.

1. hostname and hostname -s

Hello,

I have net-tools 1.54 installed and I am experiencing the following
problem which I presume might be a bug in hostname...

When I boot my RHL 6.2 machine with my ethernet card disconnected I can
run the hostname command which successfully outputs my hostname but when
I run hostname -s the command does not produce the short name as described
in the manual and instead complains about a failed DNS lookup. But if
hostname works then all hostname -s should do is the equivalent of:

hostname | awk 'BEGIN { FS="." }; { print $1 }'

Why can't hostname -s just do that? According to the man page:

       -s, --short
Display  the short host name. This is the host name
              cut at the first dot.

Thanks!

Neil
