Hi to all unix folks:

i do a lot of postings on newsgroups.   i sometimes want to be an
anonymous.  so, is there a way i can change my default user name to a
personal nickname, to appear on my posts?

You don't say what newsreader you are using.  With nn (and
probably others) you can set the defaut contents of the headers
in it's ~/.nn/init file.  RTFM for your newsreader.

Otherwise you can post via an anonymous server.  Send mail to:

and follow your nose from there.

Many newsreaders allow you to set a NAME environmental variable to be
a nickname.  Your email and posting address won't change, but things
like "Xiao Guan Wei" would change to be whatever $NAME is.

In csh:  setenv NAME Whatever You Want

        From what I've seen, Shouldn't a setenv NAME <name> Do it? That's the
only thing I've thought of.. I know that in ELM you can change it in the
options.. but as for news... this should do it..
