using tar command to extract tarred files

From reading the man: tar entry in UNIX, I deduced that the way to extract files from a gzip-1.2.4.tar file I had downloaded was with the command:
tar -x 20f gzip-1.2.4.tar.  But I keep getting the error message:
tar: /dev/rmt8: No such device, with the above command and variants on it.
Can anyone tell me how to extract the files and perhaps what is going on here?

                                       Thanks in advance,
                                               Mark

Try using "tar -xf gzip-1.2.4.tar".  The "f" options tells tar what
device (or file) to read from.

                                   Good luck,
