put Xs in front of the lines.  I don't have anonymous ftp, either.

First you should try ``shar <files> > <shar_file>''.
To unpack: ``sh <shar_file>''.

Might this not work (I doubt that), you can write your own shar (a *very*
simple version though) :

Here is shar. The only problem with this implementation is that it doesn't
preserve the rwx modes of the files.

Here's one that will...  It's called xshar and I'm passing it along as
a compressed tar with Makefile et al...

If I don't misunderstand your posting, here is my answer:

Just 'more'(in UNIX) (or 'type' in VMS) the XXX.shar file to see the contents, they always put the installation guide in it. For my experience, they usually use /bin/sh to construct the programs..
