how can I fix a cpio archive?

Is there a program to ignore a section of a bad cpio file?  In my
archive, cpio complains about a bad checksum where the encapsuled file
is one I don't care about.  Is there a version of cpio that will skip
corrupt sections?

1. cpio doesn't accept multi-volume archives

cpio will prompt for "next tape" but immediately dies upon pressing
ENTER.
I am using the command:
cpio -itv </dev/at0

Under Coherent, multi-volume archives require using the raw device.
If this is true of Linux as well, what are the raw device names/numbers?
Thanks.
