Turning .plan into a socket to log finger

Turning .plan into a socket to log finger

Post by Celia Clau » Sun, 07 Aug 1994 23:44:27

I am looking for a demon that would run any time someone fingers my account
and log where and when to a file. Does anyone have/know of something like
this that I could use?

Much thanks.

There are a heap of hacks which will do this for you. However,
check that you're able to run a background process continually on your
machine, even when you're not logged in. If you can't, there's not much
point in continuing.
Someone else mentioned a program called lumberjack. That was
simply the process name i was using for my logger - don't bother hunting
for it. One of the best loggers i've seen is called panama - i don't have
it any longer, but it was quite an amusing creature.
If you want to write your own, the theory is simple. Create a
fifo named .plan, and make a background process that will simply sit
there and monitor it. Write the file so that when it detects a read-only
accesss to the fifo, it will dump a file to it, close it, and log the
attempt (not necessarily in that order).

1. Finger Logging .plan file

Hi!

I was wondering if somebody has the code to log who has been fingering
you. I have heard there is some code to replace you .plan file that will
let you know who has been fingering you. If someone could email me
the code or at least tell me where I could FTP it I would be very grateful.

Thanks,
