long newsgroup names under SCO UNIX don't work

Post by Pete Grego » Fri, 02 Aug 1991 01:41:29

Hi - I'm running Cnews on SCO UNIX, and get the following error when Cnews
tries to post to newsgroups with names greater than 14 characters:

..."electric-midget" is greater than 14 characters in length; hence, the
subdirectory cannot be created.  No, I don't care about THIS newsgroup, but
I receive a full feed and pass news to other systems.

Questions: can I be sure that the rest of my newsbatch will be posted?  Is
there a solution in the works (ie. patches to Cnews disallowing long group
names)??

Ignorant minds (especially THIS one) want to know...

This is the POSIX FIPS requirement nonsense that annoys everyone.

Fortunately, SCO do have the good sense to let you disable this.
SCO Unix 3.2v2 has an ETRUNC parameter you can change with
/etc/conf/cf.d/configure.  Earlier versions can be adb'd
        s5namei+0xab?w 0x0feb
        xxnamei+0xa6?w 0x0feb

You can bet your last dollar that any SCO UNIX site that runs news
has ETRUNC zapped.

The FIPS requires that you must detect when filename components are too long.

It doesn't mandate that "too long" means "more than 14 bytes".  Complain
to your system provider that it should be at least 254.

I expect that my lawyer would be able to rationalize that the only case
where it is too long is when it blows up, i.e. where it is diagnosed
as an error and fails.  If you do a mkdir with a 27 character filename and
mkdir makes a directory (even with only a 14 character name) it doesn't
sound like "it is too long".
