I recently obtained a program anonymous ftp that was compressed
using zcat. When I tried to decompress it, I found out that I did not
have permission to use zat on the system. Therefore my question is: Is
there any program available to the public that is compatible with zcat?
Or do I have to find a system where zcat is available or try to get the
software compressed using a different program?

Thanks in advance,

Get the gzip package (with gzip, gunzip and gzcat) from the GNU
repository (prep.ai.mit.edu). The zcat program from gzip can read both
.gz and .Z files.

1. Bug in zcat. Whom do I tell?

Try this with the zcat that comes with SLS:

        $touch nothing
        $zcat nothing

You'll get:

read error on nothing:  Unknown error.

Here's the output of ident:

/usr/bin/zcat:
