.netrc mode?

Post by j.. » Wed, 21 Sep 1994 07:42:31

Can anyone tell me why this happens on a regular basis when I ftp?

Error - .netrc file not correct mode.
Remove password or correct mode.
221 Goodbye.
ftp>

I can get rid of this message by doing the following:

        mv .netrc x;mv x .netrc  (!?)

This is on SunOS 4.1.3

Thanks, jw

I would guess that .netrc was not -rw------- before the mv and you
have umask 077 set.

chmod 400 .netrc

should take care of this.

See the man page on netrc(5). The summary is that if you have specified your
password in .netrc, then this file should have its permissions set so that
it is readable only by you. If this condition is not met, then the
auto-login process is aborted.
I'm not sure why this happens on a regular basis. Can I suggest that you
check the permissions on this file frequently.

[ stuff about "mv .netrc x ; mv x .netrc" ]

Since when does 'mv' create files unnecessarily?  If you're not creating
the file than the umask doesn't have any effect, right?

Just what kind of 'mv' is this guy using?
