getting a tar file off a tape when you've tar cf'ed first

Post by Craig Barn » Sun, 11 Sep 1994 08:49:50

I friend of mine managed to use the tar cf comamnd when he wanted to
do a tar xf. He stopped it when he realized what he had done
but obviously tar now doesn't believe the file is there.
Is there anyway to extract, at least partially, the contents of
the tape? Perhaps with dd?

Thanks,

Craig Barnes

Well, if he has already overwritten the file he wanted, there is not
much he can do.  He can do a "tar tvf > /tmp/<file>" to see if the file
he wants is still listed.  That is, if he didn't overwrite the whole
tape.

1. wield directory entry for tar'ed gzip'ed files

When I tar and gzip a file (or download a tar'ed gzip file),
it gives the following in the directory listing:

prw-r--r--  1  root  root  (date)  28384958394  filename

The number changes, but is never the real gzip'd size, and
the p is always there.  I am using pl15g and e2f* 0.4a, but
this has occured since pl13 or 14 and the previous version
of e2f*.

What can I do to get the directory listing to print what is
really in the file?
