unix idiot.

And that I am. Just started using a shell account tried to create a
shell program and everything went bonkers. What I was trying to do was
have a group of files shift once a minute.

the script-
mv ktur.jpg ktur0.jpg
mv ktur1.jpg ktur.jpg
mv ktur2.jpg ktur1.jpg
mv ktur0.jpg ktur2.jpg
sleep( 6000 )
sh this_file

I did set all the files as writeable. but when running it the sleep
line gripped, ktur2.jpg vanished. And  when I tried to clean up the
mess, the only way I could rm the files was to rm all the files in the
directory.

Can anyone suggest a fast startup book for a dos dewb? It does look
like I will be using this os for a while, so I had better learn how.

sleep takes args in seconds, not hundredths of a second, & the
parentheses should've given you a syntax error.  The line
  sleep 60
was what you wanted there.

Then, the sh command /recursively/ calls sh, starting another process
while keeping the one that called it running; tail recursion is not
automatic.  The line
  exec sh this_file
would give you tail recursion.

I started on Unix as a DOS dweeb, a nice guy gave me some handholding
for the first few days, & I learned the rest from `man foo`.
I never found a good book, altho such may exist.
