How do I use Vacation?

Post by mont » Mon, 02 Oct 1995 04:00:00

Hello,

I would like to use Vacation to automatically reply a standard message
to mail addressed to my account. Would someone kindly show me how to do
this?

I've read the man pages and tried some experiments but have 0 success
so far.

Thank you.

Hi Monte:

I am no longer a newbie, but I am still a novice. I do, however, know how
to set up vacation on my system (a Sparc 5 pushing SunOS 4.1.3).

First, you have to create a file called (without quotes) ".vacation"

that looks something like:

Subject: I'm out having a good time
From: montes (via the vacation program)
Since I'm having fun, I won't be checking the e-mail for a while.
You're mail regarding "$SUBJECT" will be read when I'm no longer
     having fun.

Save .vacation THEN run the vacation program. The necessary files
should then be set up for you (.forward, .vacation.dir, .vacation.pag,
vacation.msg)

That's it!

Hope it works, and have a good time!

Mark

1. Help needed on using vacation !!

When the vacation command is used, the .vacation.msg will be sent to
the each sender only once a week.  Is it possible to send the message to
each sender immediately after receiving a mail ?

And also how to disable vacation ?? Is it just deleting off the files
vacation.dir ,  .vacation.pag  and .vacation.msg ??

Thanx !!
