UNIX Printer Issues

UNIX Printer Issues

Post by Dan Logche » Thu, 19 Sep 2002 10:19:21

Hi,
I've installed Solaris 8 on my Ultra-10 at home and created a UNIX print
queue
to work in conjuction with Samba.  This allows me to put the printer on
the UNIX
bot for anyone on the network to use.  It works from my PC just fine.
But when
I try to print locally on the UNIX box, it prints the postscript in
ASCII format.

I configured the UNIX print queue for postscript, since it's an Epson
Stylus 1280.
Did I forget something on the UNIX side to get it to print?

The printer is getting PS but interpretting it as text.  Break out the
printer manual and determine what must be done to get it to
recognize/expect the input to be PS.

Your 'PC' is most likely not sending it PS but rather using a driver
for the printer that talks the compatible PCL.

So for both configurations to work you either need two ports on the
printer (i.e. one PCL and one PS) or there needs to be smarts on the
single port two switch modes or to recognize a PS header.  If the
latter is there then it could be that the PS the Sun box is sending
doens't conform to what the printer expects.  If there is an escape
sequence to switch modes you need to modify the printer configuration
on the Sun to assert PS, send PS and then reset to PCL mode.

Another alternative is to get an Epson PCL driver for the Sun box.

1. Using a printer from the printer port of a term conn to a Unix comp

Is it possible to use a printer from the printer port of a terminal
connected to a computer running Unix ?  (Specifics below, but the questions I
have are general.)  I am considering both a direct (tty line) and a network
connection using rlogin or ftp from a terminal server (to which the terminal
is connected via modem and phone lines).
Some (known) escape sequences must preceed and follow the output to direct
the stream to the printer port and then back to the screen.  I can write a
shell script to insert such sequences in the output file, but this insertion
should be done after all the filtering and formatting is done.
If I use lpr (with appropriate options) for the filtering, the final output
goes to the printer directly (redirection doesn't work).  I could do the
insertion before lpr and hope that everything is ok but this might not work
in all cases.  A more serious problem is that if the printer is over a tty
line (the terminal's) lpd will fail because it requires that logins on the
tty be off.  I don't think lpd can be used if the printer is on a network
line (right ?).
Are there workarounds for these problems ?  If not, I need to filter the
ouput file directly, prepend and append escape sequences and then use cat to
send things to the terminal.  I understand the filter programs given in a
termcap entry are those actually invoked by lpd.  Where do I get information
on how to use them ?  (man doesn't give information on many such filters, e.g.,
/lib/lpf listed as the output filtering program (of) in our termcap entry for
a DecWriter over a tty.)
Please e-mail answers to the address below.  I'll post a summary if there's
enough interest [and if I have enough time :) ]  Thanks in advance.

Specifics:
 o computers are a Silicon Graphics 4D/440VGX running IRIX 3.3.2 and a
   Sun 3/280 running SunOS 4.0.1.
and, in case it matters,
 o printer is a DEC la100
o terminal is either a vt240 or an HDS Concept gvt
