using tar to store multiple compressed files to tape

We are attempting to tar multiple compressed files to a tape device and are running into some problems.
We have so far been unable to store more then one file to tape.
Syntax we are using;  "tar cvf /dev/nrmt0h [firstfile.Z]".  That syntax works OK and the first file stores
successfully.  However, when we try to store the second file using syntax;
"tar uvf /dev/nrmt0h [secondfile.Z]" we get an error stating the end of device has been reached, insert new tape
press enter blah blah blah.  We are using a new 4GB tape and there is no way that either file is even close to that size.
We are using OSF/1 2.1 b on a DEC 3000.  Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.  Please e-mail to

Thanx in advance

Why is it that...
when someone is driving slower than you,
they're a jerk.
But when someone is driving FASTER than you,
they're a maniac?
