Reading VAX/VMS backup set data from Unix?

Post by Christopher Abl » Wed, 02 Mar 1994 09:52:37

I was wondering if anyone knows how to read a VAX/VMS backup set from
Unix.  I can't use a VMS/TAR utility, because the data will already be
on the tape (probably 8mm).  Is there any software written that will do
this?  (Distribution can be unlimited or restricted to government
contracts)

Thanks

Use archie to find 'vmstp' or 'vmsbackup'.
I had the same problem (trying to read a vms backup tape) yesterday and
found 'vmsbackup' which did the job (SunOS 4.1.3).
If you can't find it, e-mail me to send it to you.

Sorry to jump into this discussion so late.

My company has a commercial that reads and writes VMS backup tapes.
It can be used as a UNIX system backup utility or as a method for
transporting data between VMS and UNIX.  Coupled with our VCL shell
for UNIX you can actually use familiar VMS BACKUP commands on UNIX.
