Dummy display with X ?

Dummy display with X ?

Post by Paul Bzows » Wed, 07 Jan 1998 04:00:00

Hi all,

Is it possible to run an X windows application without actually having
a display device? e.g. dummy_device:0.0

I ask as netscape on Unix can run as a server application taking
remote commands in?  I want to utilise this but don't actually need
any sort of display.

Thanks,
Paul

There is a Xfree86 dummy server, IIRC.

1. Is there a dummy X-display on AIX

I have a problem with my Oracle 8i installation on AIX

while performing an installation the installation program
requires the availability of an x-display to be able to
send x-displays to.

As Iam doing the silent install mode there is no need for
any X-display.

I would like to know if there is a possibility to create a
dummy x-display (f.e. DISPLAY=/dev/null) which allows me to
start the installation on an ascii console and let the
runInstaller send its messages (which there are not ) to
the bink basket.

thanks in advance
