It comes from the 1920's pulp fiction magazines and novels:
"finger", to obtain information about a person without their
knowledge. Mickey Spillane would probably be the only person
immediately at home with the term.

1. Notification of finger origin?
Maybe this might be a question for the guru newsgroup, but how does
one get the address of a person who is fingering them? I recall it
has something to do with named pipes, but I am not entirely sure.
