Features in "mail" -- "from" that ignores hostname?

I'm using standard "mail" on a BSD machine, mail version SMI 4.0.

type the entire path.  Messages sent from a different machine will
        not show up.

Now, a "mail" on a past-life Ultrix box used "From" or "F" to specify the
user name only.  Am I missing something?  Do I need to hack the source,
or has someone already done this?
