Spreadsheets for Unix

Does anyone have any suggestions for a good spreadsheet package for Unix?
Currently we are using Qcalc and it is outdated and not very functional. I have
used Excel before and found it to be very good, but I was told that we would
need to purchase a base package to be able to run it on Unix. I have gotten
two base program names (Equal & Liken) but I have been unable to get a good
idea of what and how they are used.

I would appreciate any information on base packages or other recommended
spreadsheets. One main question about the base package is does one run
several different "bookshelf" programs or would we need another one if we
wanted to run say a word processing program?

Please E-Mail me at tracy.tfd.com

Thanks in Advance!

Tracy,

I used to work for the company that owns Q-Calc (UniPress Software,
who bought out the license last year when Quality software went out
of business.  Quality software other spreadsheet, eXclaim!, is
X-Windows only, and I remember it being fairly good, kinda similiar
to excel, but nothing to rave about.  UniPress has eXclaim still, but
the develment rights were purchased by Island software, and I think
they were going to rename it IslandCalc.  Lotus 1-2-3 for UNIX
was only fair, and was overpriced, but Lotus decided to stop putting
resources into UNIX development.

So, this was my two-cents worth on UNIX spreadsheets...an area that
I never found a really spectacular product to do.  UniPress would
probably give you a free 30-day evaluation copy of eXclaim!, which
couldn't hurt to look at--but I would still keep looking to see
if some innovative company has finally made a great, low-cost
UNIX spreadsheet.

Does anyone out there know of any spreadsheets applications that can be
used on a Unix workstation ? I am familiar with Wingz, but am looking for
 something more like Excel.

 Any help is appreciated.
