Help with root on my 386 running System V

Post by XKMFD » Mon, 16 Nov 1998 04:00:00

I recently purchased a 386 running AT&T UNIX System V for 10 bucks...While I
know the password to access the Audix voicemail system, I can't get root
access.

What are my options for getting acess to root? do I need to reinstall UNIX?. If
so, where can I get a copy of System V for very little or for free?(no manuals
needed, I have those)

My #1 frustration is that I can learn stuff faster than I can read it off the
page. It's a damn bottleneck.

I recommend Linux. I've used Red Hat and SuSE; I prefer Red Hat.

Tell us more about the system: How much hard drive space, RAM, what
video
card, etc.

A: Because they are expected to run Microsoft operating systems.

It's got a 38 meg ESDI in it, 4 megs of RAM, and the video card is VGA (i
think)

What I really need to do is get the password file off it (it's shadowed, and
I've had no luck finding it) once I do that, I can crack it on my pentium.
Installing a new OS isn't really an option, since it's set up as an Audix
voicemail server, and I'll lose the Audix stuff If I re-install...I basically
need to hack it...I asked the guy who sold it to me, and he doesn't know the
root login either..

You can always head over to rootshell.com, and see if they've got any
general-purpose exploits that might work under your OS.  (Like sendmail
exploits.)  If it's got network services, it can probably be hacked.
Hunt around for suid-things.  See if they can be exploited.  (You'd be
suprised.)  Check your boot-scripts to see if any were left
world-writable.  Check your directories to see if you can write to them.
