uuencode filename.ext filename.ext > filename.exe.uu

That works fine, but how can I get the program to split the file into
e-mail size chunks (40K?).  And why must I type in the filename twice?
If I don't, it encodes to the screen.

I have not been able to receive any help from the sysops and the man
uuencode is not very informative. Thanks in advance.

On the ultrix, I don't believe you *need* 2 filenames, but  you do have
to redirect it because uuencodes output goes to stdout (your terminal if
you don't redirect..).  I don't know if can use uudecode to split the
file, but you can try to gzip it; maybe that will work.
