Shell TIME function. Please help !

Post by Sandeep Kharka » Tue, 16 Jul 1996 04:00:00

Hi,

        I need to know how to interpret the
        output of the shell TIME function

        eg.

        $ time myprog
          43.44u 3.6s 2+3io ... etc.

        Please help me. The man pages don't give
        much (any) info on this.

        ThanX !

User, System, there's usually "elapsed" in here --+, and the rest tends
to be fairly anarchic; ie., system dependent.

This "time date" on my system:

0.00user 0.06system 0:00.21elapsed 28%CPU (0avgtext+0avgdata 0maxresident)k
0inputs+0outputs (25major+71minor)pagefaults 0swaps

1. Please help with simple Bash shell function

Hello

I am new to bash and have scoured the FAQ and the on-line manual but
have not found a straightforward example of a shell function.

I have an alias in csh that does perl -c on the last file I edited
with vi.

In bash I am trying:

pc () { perl -c `echo !vi | sed "s/.* //g"` ; }

On the command line this works fine, but not in the function in
profile.

On the command line I can do:

bash$ vi foo
bash$ perl -c `echo !vi | sed "s/.* //g"`
perl -c `echo vi foo | sed "s/.* //g"`
foo syntax OK

But from the function I get

bash$ vi foo
bash$ pc
Can't open perl script "!vi": No such file or directory

Obviously it is something to do with escaping  !vi but I think I have
tried all combinations I can come up with and I consistently get the
same error.

Help, please!
