uemacs overwriting permissions

Post by Ted Uhlema » Sun, 18 Aug 1991 05:26:19

is there anyone out there using MicroEMACS 3.11B?  if so, do you know
anything about a bug that causes it to overwrite the permissions on a
file when re-saving it?  (i.e. if im editing a file with permissions
rwxrwxrw- when i save it the permissions get set to those in my umask,
which are rw-rw-r--).  it's very annoying, whatever's causing it.
please help.

uEmacs is making a backup copy (I think).  It does this by re-naming the
original file, and writing out the new file.  Because of this the
permissions follow the backup.  This is also a problem with files that
are linked together.

use the string

set $ssave false

in your .emacsrc-file. This should fix the problem.

This happened with 3.10e as well.  The solution is to add the line
set $SSAVE FALSE

in your .emacsrc file (or whatever you have called it).

When SSAVE is true emacs tries to save your file by renaming the old
one and creating a new file.  Setting $ssave to false stops this.

this is a work around really.

the code has to be moded to get it to work properly if you require a
`safe save` (like i do)

This bug was also in MicroEMACS 3.10.

Drove me crazy!!!

1. uEmacs permissions/ownership bug?

I am trying to run uEmacs, but it has this annoying bug in the Linux
binary I got off sunsite I think.

When you save, it saves as userid.userid in mode 664, regardless if the
file existed before or not or what its perms and ownership was. THis is
causing alot of trouble all over my system.

The use of microemacs rather than emacs was caused by me getting
frustrated with emacs under X.

It runs in its own silly little window in X which always pops up in an
annoying place. I would like it to run in my current window.

Even with emacs -nw, it doesnt work: all the key bindings to use my
cursor keys in my .emacs file DO NOT work, and I get lots of A's (not [A
or whatever, tho, note) when I hit the keys. (I refuse to use other
curosr keys like CTRL Right-Shift Upside Down Bang or whatever.)

If anyone has a solution to either or both of these problems, please
email to this address, as I fear any responces will be lost in this
mammoth subhierarchy of groups.

Thanks.

(oh, if someone could point out a fixed binary, that would be good. and
if yo supply a patch, tell me exactly how to apply it, i am not quite
sure how to do it. (yes some people know very little about what they're
doing... :))
