Do you have a link light?  What does ifconfig -a give ya?

Is it possible that you forgot to include support for your NIC via in the
kernel or as a module?

Check your psedo devices and NIC devices to make sure they are installed
and that you have loop and ether.  (Wild guess on my behalf, let me know
how you go.)
