making getpwnam system call work on solaris

I was trying to use  system call getpwnam() for expanding ~user
info to get the user home directory path.
This does not seem to work on sun, solaris.  What changes should I ask
system adminstrator to do, in order to make this system call work.
I was sucessful in  using the same on sunos machines.

Thanks for any help.
