.forward file: possible to forward and also keep mail?

.forward file: possible to forward and also keep mail?

Post by R. Kal » Mon, 21 May 2001 00:34:00

I couldn't find an obvious 'right' group for this question...followups set
to comp.unix.questions .

Our mail server is an Unix system, and I have used the .forward file to
send autoreplies and also to forward mail. However, when mail is forwarded
by entering an e-mail address in .forward, it is deleted from the original
mailbox.

I would like to set up my account while travelling to forward mail but alo
save a copy in the original mailbox. I cannot find any documentation on our
system about how to use the .forward file in this way. All help greatly
appreciated.

You can do this and more with procmail.

man procmail

Well, technically, it never got to your inbox first, so it didn't have
a chance to delete it.

But, you can put multiple addresses in your .forward, including your
local account. All Unix MTA's are smart enough to detect the loop, and
will break out of it right away, (but the \ character specificly tells
the MTA not to expand that address anymore).

So, just setup your .forward like so..

or however you want to have it, and you'll save a copy of the mail, as
well as auto-responding, or auto-forward.

Many thanks! It worked fine. Unix is powerful but I wish there was better
documentation.

Actually, your question should be documented on your system. Just do a

        man forward

IMO, most Unixes are fairly well documented, but it is often hard to
actually *find* the documentation. This is not a particular problem with
Unix, or is it? I guess this is a general problem with every operating
system, where the tools available to the user come from different
sources.

1. mail forwarding problem with ".forward" file

I have a question about adding the ".forward" file in my unix user
directory.

I 'd like all incoming mails forwarded to another address temporarily whilst
I am away but I also want the machine to keep a copy of it for reference
when I return. Does anyone know how to do this? Normally I just put the
forwarding email address in the .forward file but it won't keep a copy of
it.

Thanks.
