Need to connect Unix to Mac via modem - suggestions?

Post by Laura Bel » Sun, 09 Jan 1994 16:51:28

I have Sun Sparcstations running a CADD package in my department.
Ten miles away is another department running a different CADD package
on Macintoshes.

We have been giving the Mac's dxf files of our drawings on floppies
but would like to start doing the transfers via modem.

Anyone out there set up something like this?

I know the workings of my unix boxes pretty well but I'm no wizard.
The Mac's are in another department and I don't know what the set up
is over there and from my conversations with their users I don't think
they know either (but they would be happy to have me figure out how to
connect the two together <sigh> ).

Any help/recommendations to head me in the right direction would be
greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

There's nothing special about the Mac but the serial cable.
There are some Mac-specific modems that will connect to the Mac ADB
(keyboard) port, in ***my*** opinion, avoid this kind of things and buy
a current external modem. From a ZyXEL to a Supra, anything will do.
Then you'll have to buy a serial cable from your Apple dealer, make
sure that you tell them that you want to connect a modem.

Then you have to select the software.
If all you want is a terminal there are zillions of term emulators for
the mac, but you have to chose a comms program that support a File
Transfer Protocol (this is not related to the ftp progeam) that you
can install on the unix side too.

The most portable program is Kermit, you have kermit for everything,
from unix to ms-dos, to ibm mainframes, and Macs. Ask in some of the
Mac groups where to get it. For the unix version, I have a site name
and a path name somewhere, but I have to search for it.

Other option whould be BLAST, as BLAST is a commercial program it may
be easy to get, but take care, the thing is expensive.

Or you may try Zmodem, find on the net a packadge named
rzsz<something> and a comms prog for the mac that support Zmodem.
For me, Zmodem is the best protocol, but compiling rzsz in some
unix'es may be tricky.

Hope this helps, mail me if you want to talk more about this.
