I need any information about TCP/IP topology in a UNIX field

Post by Tec. Marcos Sena D'Acost » Mon, 05 May 1997 04:00:00

I' ve been assigned in my University to lead a project in TCP/IP topology
in a UNIX field.

As I'm at the starting point I need any, and I mean ANY information about
that.

Please answer back as soon as you can to let me know a site or webpage
where I can get such information.

Many thanks in advance,

Marcos Sena

Buy the TCP/IP books by Richard Stevens,   TCP/IP Illustrated.   Come to think
of it, he used to be about on this newsgroup, has he taken a break from Usenet?

1. Help: How to change the value of the time-to-live-field in TCP/IP header?

Problem: We have trouble reaching mail hosts in Japan from our site.

Reason: The routes to Japan have more than 30 hops (reported by "traceroute").
The "time-to-live-field" in each TCP/IP-Packet's header defaults to 30 hops, so
that the packets are discarded before they can reach their destination.

Question: Who can tell me how to increase the ttl value in the TCP/IP-Header?
(I know this has to be done on both hosts...). In "traceroute" the number of
hops can be specified by the "-n" option, that means that the ttl value can be
changed dynamically. But how to change the default? Recompiling the kernel or
whatever???
