3270 interface package for text-based apps?

I've been looking for a package for a project at work, and so far, it has
eluded me. Well, mostly: I found one package (Cleo toolset) but they don't
have a version for SunOS or Solaris, which are my platform choices.

I'm writing a few processes that interact with a 3270-type mainframe, and
I just want a character-based screen-scraping library. What I need to do
is a bit too complex for just launching an app with a script; I want
accountability, easy maintenance via a database, &c &c. So I was just
wondering if anyone could recommend a package that would fit.

Thanks!

1. Interfacing to text-based program

I want to write a graphic interface to an interactive program which currently
accepts text input, and displays its output on the screen. The text-based
program already exists, and I only have the executable, so I can't modify it in
any way.

I think what I need to do is grab stdin and stdout for the text program, but
without much Unix experience I'm not sure how to do it.

What would be ideal would be the source to the chesstool or gammontool program,
as that's very similar to what I want to do, but I'm not sure if that's freely
available.

Any pointers would be welcome, thanks.
