Help with low-level device I/O

I have an Exabyte 8505 tape drive connect to the SCSI bus on a SPARC IPC
running Solaris 2.5.  I want to be able to format a SCSI CDB and send it to
the device and read the response.  How can I do this?  I already have made a
program to do this in MS-DOS, MS-Windows, and OS/2.  Surely UNIX provides a
way.  I saw several functions in the man9? pages.  Any pointers, experiences,
or comment will be welcome.  Thanks in advance.
