We have been given the FORTRAN source code of a large simulation code,
consisting of very many nested subroutines and need to understand how it
works (runs under UNIX). Is there a tool that can analyze the code and
create e.g. a structogram of the subroutines, tell which variables are
passed where etc?

Well, not a graphics tool, but you might want to try the GNU profiler and
analysis tools. They'll give you some of that information at any rate.
