display the file contents of a large tar.Z file

Post by TingCho » Sun, 15 Jun 2003 02:37:15

I have a very large tar.Z file which I only display its file contents.
The steps I want to do are
1. gunzip bsmbld1210pkgd.tar.Z
2. tar tvf bsmbld1210pkgd.tar > bsmbld1210filecontent

However, step 1 fails because bsmbld1210pkgd.tar is too large to fit
in my hard disk.
This does not work either:
gunzip bsmbld1210pkgd.tar.Z | tar tvf -
gunzip bsmbld1210pkgd.tar.Z | tar tvf f -

Please help.
Thanks.

Any of:

zcat bsmbld1210pkgd.tar.Z | tar tvf -
gzip -cd bsmbld1210pkgd.tar.Z | tar tvf -
gunzip -c bsmbld1210pkgd.tar.Z | tar tvf -

Also

tar tzvf bsmbld1210pkgd.tar.Z

(if tar understands; usually it's GNU tar which understands)

These last two don't pipe the uncompressed file to tar, which is
what you were wanting to happen.

  gnunzip -c fname.tar.Z | tar tv

is what you want (note that the 'f' option is not necessary).

If you have gnu tar,  just use the 'z' option,

     tar -ztvf fname.tar.Z

"gunzip -c bsmbld1210pkgd.tar.Z | tar tvf -"  should work.
"zcat bsmbld1210pkgd.tar.Z | tar tvf -" probably as well.

FWIW, since the file ends with .Z, it's probably compressed with the
compress(1) utility. You can also use uncompress(1) instead of
gunzip(1).

[...]

Quote:> gunzip < file | tar vx

He wants the file listing: so 'tar vt'. 'x' extracts the files.

For very very large files

gunzip -c < bsmbld1210pkgd.tar.Z | tar tvf - > bsmbld1210filecontent

I have seen very very large files (>2Gb) cause unizpping to fail when passed
on the command line, but OK when sent as standard input. [on HPUX]

That's probably caused by a 32-bit file offset being used.  I don't
know about gzip, but many programs have an option to be built with
support for large files, if the system supports it (it should).

Right. I thought he wanted to e'x'tract.

        Of course on a real 64-bit OS, a 2GB file isn't a special case
so-called "largefile".  SOLARIS...  LOL!!

                Hope this helps,

1. display the file contents of a large tar.Z file

I have a very large tar.Z file which I only display its file contents.
The steps I want to do are
1. gunzip bsmbld1210pkgd.tar.Z
2. tar tvf bsmbld1210pkgd.tar > bsmbld1210filecontent

However, step 1 fails because bsmbld1210pkgd.tar is too large to fit
in my hard disk.
This does not work either:
gunzip bsmbld1210pkgd.tar.Z | tar tvf -
gunzip bsmbld1210pkgd.tar.Z | tar tvf f -

Please help.
Thanks.
