Bi-directional parallel ports

I find myself needing to talk Printer Job Language to printers
on parallel ports. Is there any magic to getting a parallel port
open in bidirectional mode in terms of naming or ioctl calls?
Are there any conventions for this? (I need portability.)

While I'm at it, how about USB printers?

1. bi-directional parallel ports/brother HL-630

Hi,

Is there currently support for bi-directional parallel port communication
in the kernel? (besides PLIP, I guess)- I recently purchased a Brother
HL-630 laser printer and the software that came with it is capable of
incredible things with the printer in DOS and Windows, most of which
cannot be changed via the buttons on the printer. Since I'm DOS- and
Windows-less, I was dwelling on developing something to allow
me/you/whoever to do these things in Linux and don't want to be
redundant. (So if you're working on it or it's already there and it's
invisible, please let me know!)
