Ok I tried to find the file java in a dir and subdirs and I got the
following:

$find /java1.3 -name java -print
find: cannot stat /java1.3

I have no idea what the OS means here, what is 'to stat'?

Enter

  man stat

at the prompt. But this does not show the reason of the error message.
Did you try running fsck on your partition? Normally this error comes
from a damaged file system (especially reiserfs likes to crash).

Do you get the same message when typing

  ls -al

from the / directory?

It means "to get the attributes of".  The error means that either /java1.3
doesn't exist, or you don't have permission to access it.

Mmmm, if I do some likewise statement in the parent directory of java1.3 it
does search, very strange. Well I did find this file. Thanks for all
suggestions guys!

1. What does "find: cannot stat /some/file" mean?

Lately, I've been getting this message from my system:

  Date: Tue, 9 May 1995 03:16:11 -0500
  From: Operator <root>
  To: root
  Subject: Output from "cron" command

  Your "cron" job

  find / -name .nfs\* -mtime +7 -exec rm -f {} \; -o -fstype nfs -prune

  produced the following output:

find: cannot stat /home/list/gate-tech: No such file or directory
find: cannot stat /home/list/gate-announce: No such file or directory
find: cannot stat /home/list/.bash_history: No such file or directory
find: cannot stat /home/joes: No such file or directory
find: cannot stat /home/cupid: No such file or directory
find: cannot stat /home/bsim: No such file or directory
  ...

What does it mean?  Should I be worried?  Is there a solution?

Cheers,
Rob
