XDM login vs remote login (determining which one)

Post by Vida » Sat, 21 Dec 1996 04:00:00

In a shell script (Bourne and/or C), how would one determined if they
logged into a workstation remotely (via telnet, rlogin, rsh, ...) or
through the console via XDM?  I'd prefer to implement this login in a
user's startup script (such as .cshrc or .profile).

I noticed that when logging in through the console via XDM, using `tty
-l` will only give you the name of a pseudo-terminal.  The same goes for
a remote login.

Any help would be very much appreciated!  --john

1. XDM Login vs Remote Login (determining which is which)

I would like to implement in my .cshrc and .profile startup scripts
logic which determines whether or not I remotely logged (via telnet,
rlogin, rsh, etc...) in or logged in through the console via XDM.  The
problem I have found with XDM login was that using `tty -l` just gives
you the name of a pseudo-terminal (when I worked on a machine which did
not have XDM, `tty -l` would give be /dev/console), which a remote login
also does.

Any help would be very much appreciated!  -john
