vt100 escape code question

Post by Rakesh Battepat » Tue, 03 Mar 1998 04:00:00

Hello,
            I apologize if this is the wrong newsgroup.

Regarding vt100 escape codes:

1) How do you send out just an "ESCAPE" character ?

2) What is the limit of the number of characters after an "ESCAPE"
character to make a meaningful escape code? I can see that some
escape codes conatin 1 char after an "ESCAPE" char, some contain
2 chars after an "ESCAPE" char and so on.

newsgroup, I have a slow connection.

Thanks

Character code 27.

You mean the '['?  Its just a guard to insure that you meant an
escape sequence.  It used to be really easy for line garbage to
mangle serial ASCII data.  A single character could easily get
changed to ESC.  The codes with '[' are ANSI.

Forgot to address the limit issue:

*Most* have a limit of ESC [ xx ; xx a
                        ^  ^ ^^ ^ ^^ ^----This could be any letter
                        |  | || | ||      letter specifies function
                        |  | || | ||______One or Two character
                        |  | || |         parameter in the form of
                        |  | || |         "1" or ""19"
                        |  | || |_________Parameter seperator
                        |  | ||___________One or Two character
                        |  |              parameter in the form of
                        |  |              "1" or ""19"
                        |  |______________Escape "guard"
                        |_________________Escape

There are cases that can have more than 2 parameters, such as
the character format sequences ( ESC [ xx m ).
Case: ESC[1;2;7;5m

How many?  I always coded for 40 characters max.  Seems reasonable and
I've never run an application that could break any of the emulators
I've written.  I've got an original DEC VT102 handbook and can look up
specifics if you really need them.

: *Most* have a limit of ESC [ xx ; xx a
:                         ^  ^ ^^ ^ ^^ ^----This could be any letter
not "any": the set of characters is limited by the ANSI and ISO standards.
(I don't have it in front of me - it's roughly the printing characters

What I meant was any command letter (A, H, m, etc.)

but now that I'm home: the standard states
the final byte "consists of a bit combination from 04/00 to 07/14"

It doesn't give a limit for the size of a parameter (the 'xx' fields in
the example above), though for vt100 most of the sequences other than
cursor movement and addressing don't have a use for parameter values above 99.
(I can't remember or cite a reference wrt the 132-column mode - anyone?)

(I shouldn't post on Friday nights: '~' is included, of course)
