Acquiring the MAC address

Acquiring the MAC address

Post by Jerry Sloa » Wed, 11 Jun 2003 13:06:39

Hello,

I work for fP Technologies, Inc. We sell a software named filePro. We
have recently ported filePro to FreeBSD. We also sell a GUI product that
runs with a server. The server requires a license which requires that
the server software know the MAC address of the machines NIC. With Linux
and SCO unix we use libgethost.so to acquire the MAC address for the
licensing. Oh yeah I almost forgot the server is Java based. For some
reason we have been unable to get this option to work with FreeBSD. I am
not the programmer, but I thought I would throw this out to this list
and then pass on any ideas that I might receive.

Thanks
Jerry Sloan

The magic word is SIOCGIFCONF and example source can be found on the 'net.

1. filtering users by mac address and limiting bandwidth to each mac.

Yes, you can filter the users with iptables -m mac --mac-source and
you can adjust the bandwith using iproute2 and the 'tc' command. You
can read the lartc document at lartc.org that explains how to adjust
the bandwidth.
