Help!

If I work with Midnight Commander 4.1 in FreeBSD 2.2.5 from
Windows NT Telnet (terminal VT100) everywhere on screen
   appear symbols "$<2>". Why?

So you set the telnet program to VT100 and set your TERM
environment variable to vt100 too ?  Either mc is doing
something bad or the terminal emulation of NT is just not
capable of emulating a VT100 correctly.  My guess is the
latter.

Windows NT telnet isn't very good, try http://www.chrysalis.org/jbj for
one that works.

Alternatively, try setting TERM to vt102 or vt220.  I had this problem
with 95 telnet a few years back... forget which one (or both?) work :)

Your guess is correct.  There are several free/shareware telnet clients
which do a better job than the crippled one which comes with NT.

A better overall solution might be to get one of the free X
implementations available for NT, or a commercial one like Hummingbird
eXceed.

Good Luck,
