Parallel port cd-reader/writer

Parallel port cd-reader/writer

Post by Yves Deweer » Wed, 23 Jun 1999 04:00:00

I'm currently running FreeBSD 3.1. on a Pentium MMX with 2 parallel ports
Now I'm trying to configure one of these ports for connecting a HP 7200
external CD-rewriter to it.
That's where the troubles begin, I really have no idea how I should do
that! Can anyone help me out with this?
How do I have to configure the kernel, what devices do I have to make,...?

If there is anyone who ever got a parallel cd-rom reader to work, please
let me know how you did it, it could really solve my problem

Thanks!

The simple answer is that you don't want to even begin.

Two reasons:

1) HP make great laser printers.  Their CD's are shite.  Stick to the people
who know about cd's - Phillips (Traxdata are re-badged phillips) or sony or
Plextor.

2)  Parallel ports were never designed to transfer data at the speeds
required for reliable CDROM usage.  You will have great problems with Buffer
Underrun errors (data transmitting too slow), and it is doubtful that you
will ever maintain the smooth data transfer rates required to write audio
data.  Either way you probably won't be able to write at more that 1x.

Stick to SCSI or IDE - preferrably (imho) SCSI as it is much much simpler,
if a little more expensive.

Furtle.

1. External, parallel port CD-RW (HP CD-Writer 7200) and Linux (RH7.3)

Hi all,

Does anybody know how to get linux to recognize this device?
(Hewlett-Packard CD-Writer Plus 7200, externel)

I found the paraport/paride stuff on torque.net, but it all seems horribly
out of date, refering to compiling in modules that are already in the
kernel, it seems.

If anyone could please give me /any/ hint, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Pablo
