Installation via FTP troubles...

Post by James N. Gra » Wed, 25 Jun 1997 04:00:00

I am having some difficulty installing FreeBSD via FTP. I have a dialup
account with a local Internet Service Provider in the area. The FreeBSD
program asks for a "HOST" (the very first entry block, upper left hand
corner). What should go here? I have never had to use this for Windows
Winsock applications (only domain and DNS). For example:

My ISP's info
DOMAIN=afn.org
NAMESERVER=128.227.163.5
GATEWAY= (won't know until connection because it's dynamic.)

They are expecting an entry like:  foo.bar.com  for the "HOST".

Should I just put:  afn.org ?  I tried afn.org and I can't get it to
work...

Not true.  Your IP address may be (probably is) dynamic, but your
ISP's DEFAULT GATEWAY has a fixed IP address, which they should
be able to provide to you.  I've not done an FTP install, but
from what I've seen in other posts Re: this topic recently, the
HOST that is being asked for is the FTP site to which you're
trying to connect.

I hope I'm right and I hope this helps,

You don't need to know your ISPs default gateway, just specify it
as x.x.x.x/0 (say 10.10.11.11/0).

1. trouble updating to suse 7.3 via ftp

can anybody help :
i'm running suse 7.0 on a g4-powermac.
trying to update via yast i found out
that i need yast >= 1.10 to update/install
via ftp (i'm running 1.07.1).
so i tried to install the latest yast and
found out that i need glib >= 2.2 for yast >= 1.10.
since i did "rpm -Uhv --force glibc2.3.rpm"
i cannot use rpm at all anymore :
"rpm: ../iconv/skeleton.c:302: gconv:
Assertion `outbufstart == ((void *)0)' failed."
does anybody know how to repair this ?
is there a place where i can download the
latest CD-images for SUSE-7.3ppc ?
or can anybody copy the discs for me ?
any help appreciated...
