Need to provide Internet Access from our LAN

Need to provide Internet Access from our LAN

Post by Darr » Sat, 30 May 1998 04:00:00

Greetings,
we have a Internal LAN.  On it are several Win95 machines and a couple
HP's and Suns (older).  Am looking to provide internet access without
modems and phone lines to every win95 machine.  We are located in
a rural area where ISDN, 56K, 64K circuits are cost prohibitive.  Was
wondering if FreeBSD would allow multiple modems in a machine.  Then
Win95 machines would indicate its IP address for internet access.
FreeBSD would dial the local dailup number.  This would provide 5
concurrent users on the internet.  Is there a simplier, but still cost
effective solution?

any help greatly appreciated.

You can use /usr/sbin/ppp with the -alias flag.  This will allow all
hosts to access the internet connection simultaneously.

Here is what I have,
yup, FreeBSD will do that w/out problems, but you only need one modem.
as was stated use the -alias option w/ ppp and If memory serves you need
to setup the win95 machines to use the BSD box as the gateway.
I am doing just that at home, However It isn't just shareing the modem,
but doing firewall/DNS/dialup yadda yadda yadda...hmmmm sell it to you.

Yes, look in the ports collection for mpd, the Multilink PPP daemon.

The latest ppp (http://www.Awfulhak.org/ppp.html) does multilink too :-)

It's in -current and will probably never make 2.2-stable as
it's likely to be classed as an enhancment rather than a bug
fix :-)

so, it would be in 3.0-stable then ? based on jordan's release schedule,
and accounting for some inadvernt delays, i dont mind waiting for
3.1-stable to be out to get multilink ppp.
