Newbie: Port/Package Upgrading?

I am trying to install software that depends on more recent versions of
the ports/packages that were installed by default. I can't remove these
old files (to install the newer versions) as pkg_delete informs me of
their dependants! So how does one upgrade a port or package in FreeBSD
(5.0)?

portupgrade is a great tool for managing port upgrades.

1. Package upgrade - NEWBIE

Is there a simple way to have the system go out and check for a newer
version of a program?  I would like to upgrade the current verion of pine
that is on my system.  I am running freebsd 2.2.7.  To install pine I did a
make install in the pine4 directory under ports/mail.
