5.0 - enabling network ports

Post by mhears » Wed, 05 Feb 2003 22:43:38

I recently install 5.0.  I'm now trying to setup telnet and ftp services.
In previous versions, this only ment commenting out the desired ports in
the inetd.conf file.  I've done this, but still can't login remotely.
However, Apache is running fine.  How do I enable the telnet and ftp
services for FreeBSD 5.0?   THANKS>

Is inetd running? try:

ps ax| grep inetd

Also check:

grep inetd /etc/defaults/rc.conf
grep inetd /etc/rc.conf

and see if inetd is being started at boot time.

That was it!  I added inetd_enable="YES" to rc.conf.  Thanks.

You also need to kill -HUP Inetd, is it running?

1. Error enabling patches for "SCO:Unix 5.0.0Cl"??

Aye karumba!

I'm trying to apply 5.0.0d and oss437a to my OSR5.0.0 system.  The
system is not a "complete" load as this is a bastion host -- only the
most necessary components are on the system.

I've "Load"ed the patches onto the system, but when I try to "Apply"
them I get errors.  The one that disturbs me the most occurs in both
patch "Apply" operations, but I will focus on the oss437a for
simplicity.

After I've "Apply"ed the patch I get a dialog box saying:

Error enabling patches for "SCO:Unix 5.0.0Cl"

at which I select "Details..." and see the following error dialog:

Error applying client portion of patch "rs.Unix500.1.0. for component
"SCO:Unix 5.0.0Cl"
Package "SCO:Unix:BASE 5.0.0Cl has not been attached, and therefore can
not be patched

I'm not sure what this error is _really_ saying.  What did and didn't
happen with the application of this patch?

There are quite a few errors on installing 5.0.0d as well, which I think
might be leading to the above errors.

Anybody have any ideas/insights?  Should patches load with no problems
on systems with a minimal of packages loaded?
