terminal emulator for traffic via COM port

Post by Phani Gopal A » Sat, 26 Jun 1999 04:00:00

Hi All,
I want an emulator which will allow me to send out plaiin ascii text to
a machine connected via a NULL modem . The interpreting of the ascii
characters will be done by the other end
Is there any emulator which allows me to send plain ascii strings via a
COM port and get display the resulting  data from the other side
TIA

If you don't want to bother with Kermit you could just echo the strings
out the com port:

echo "Hey there!" >/dev/ttya

Using a perl script you can write output to ttya like any other file.
The same goes for reading from ttya. You can get fancy to and set line
settings on the port to handle flow-control, parity and other settings
too.

1. need terminal emulator for "com port" for redhat 5.2

i have been using the command    cu -l /dev/cua1  to do terminal
emulation
on comport 1.
this has been working  with rh5.1 when i rlogin to the machine with the
com port
and then run the cu as mentioned above.
with rh 5.2, if i am on the console of the machine,  the cu command
works,
but if i rlogin/telnet to the machine the cu command only seems to
display
what is received on the com port, and doesn't send any keystrokes to the
comport

any ideas what is going on ?

i permisions wide open on /dev/cua1 (rwx for everyone)

thanks,
dan
