Crossover Cable Needed for Direct NIC 2 NIC?

Crossover Cable Needed for Direct NIC 2 NIC?

Post by Bloui » Tue, 14 May 2002 20:19:10

Hey Guys,

Thanks for the past help... everything has been going smooth and
been reading a lot of brand new material on UNIX commands to get
better :)...

I hope I answer my own question here, but d o I need
to use a crossover cable to directly connect a Ethernet Card to
another Ethernet Card? Will a regular cable work?

I already have a working inner LAN (192.168.0.1 255.255.255.0) and
have installed a third NIC card (10.0.0.1 255.255.255.0), but I am
having a problem having BOTH 10.0.0.1 and 10.0.0.2 connect with
each other. I know they are working because I can ping them from
themselves and they are functioning and being recognized. They also
light up as soon as I plug them into my HUB... each one lights up!

Does this mean I need a crossover cable to have them communicate
directly since I DONT have 10.0.0.1 connected to a HUB?

Thanks,

Blouis

You will need a cable as this:
1 <-----> 3
2 <-----> 6
3 <-----> 1
6 <-----> 2
(pinout is here: http://www.cmsa.wmin.ac.uk/~alan/components/conn/#RJ45 )

hehe. I'm at work, time is approx a quarter past two pm here. Not that
I never use my computer at 4am, but answering news at that time is
somewhat dangerous :)
I have another (better) link if you like to know your cabling:
http://www.veryComputer.com/

Enjoy!

comp.unix.bsd.freebsd.misc ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I woke up pulled up my chones and grabbed a razor blade... grabbed
my last "straight" ethernet cable meant for a hub... took a big
gulp and cut wires:

        orange & orange-white
        green  & green-white

Stripped all of them and then connected wires:

        orange-white > green-white
        green        > orange

... IT WORKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks a lot guys... always a big help :) It was kind of confusing
at first... but after looking it over for a bit it made sense... :)
thanks now I have two different internal networks! Things are
really starting to cook now... thanks guys!

Could you perhaps explain that about your lan and nics again in a bit more
detail.
If I am understanding you. You have 3 NICS in your box and the first two you
can ping, but not the third?
