Newbie needs help setting up gateway

Post by Eric Winge » Sat, 09 Jun 2001 11:31:52

I am using FreeBSD 4.0 and trying to use it as a gateway to the internet for
my windows 98 machine.  I printed up the tutorial on the FreeBSD.org website
and followed all the directions.  When I try to ping the windows 98 machine
I keep on getting host is down.  My IP Addresses in the FreeBSD machine is
as follows:
127.0.0.1        localhost
192.168.1.1    winger.my.domain  winger #FreeBSD box
192.168.1.2    user.my.domain  user     #windows machine

My ifconfig shows the ethernet card as xl0 (3com 3c905TX) with flags=8843
showing it is up.
My BIOS shows the 3com card as IRQ 9.
I have the host name as winger.my.domain.
I have also configured the file rc.conf to setup the network interfaces for
the loopback and ethernet card.

Can someone please give me some suggestions?  I have been learning FreeBSD
for a few weeks now and have been able to solve all my problems exept for
this one.

Newbie needs help setting up gateway

I was in the same situation (FreeBSD 4.3 as a gateway for a Win 98 computer) and
found out everything I needed at the following website:

http://www.mostgraveconcern.com/freebsd/

It's a step-by-step instruction. Very interesting.

Eric Winger a crit :

Do you have those machines connected through a hub or with a direct
connection between them?

If you have no hub and have only a cable joining the 2 NIC's then you must
use a crossover cable.

1. Newbie: Switching to ADSL: need general advices on setting up a Linux system as gateway.

Hi all,

I am in the process of acquiring an ADSL connection to the web, and
since I have three computers in my home office, I would like to set up
a fourth one, an old PC (Pentium 133, 32MB Ram) as a linux gateway
between my ADSL bridge and a hub connected to an ethernet LAN.

The primary purposes for that solution would be installing and
learning how to use Linux, sharing the only fixed IP address I can
afford among all my computers, and providing a little security for my
home network. If all goes well I may try and set up a small web
hosting system, but I will ask you about that later on =).

I am a very experienced windows user, but I have never seen Linux at
work, or installed it, so I would like to choose a distribution that
could allow me to start working on linux easily enough without
sacrificing much in terms of power and customization.

Would you please tell me whether something like RedHat 6.2 would be a
good choice for me, and point me in the general direction of the
resources I'd better look up before installing the whole stuff?

Would you also please advice me on a security software (firewall or
something) I could use on this setup?

Thank you for your time.

JC
