Question from lamer - installation problem

Post by Wojciech Czaplinsk » Sat, 12 Apr 1997 04:00:00

I tried to install FreeBSD as described in 'FreeBSD handbook', but it
didn't work in the very beginning. The boot procedure (from the
boot.flp) hangs like this:

(cut...)

Boot:
dosdev= 0, biosdrive = 0, unit = 0, maj = 2
Can't find /kernel

Seems the boot floppy is OK?

                             thanx in advance - Wojtek

Try writing the image to another floppy.  Sounds like a dodgy
floppy drive :|

If you have doubts about the floppy image itself, run "md5 boot.flp"
and compare the output with the md5 file in the floppies directory.
Of course you'll need md5 :)

...or like an attempt to boot the fixit floppy. :)

Question from lamer - installation problem

How are you installing it: (DOS partition? ,disks?, straight from CD,
anon.FTP?)  Obviously it can't find the bootup kernel.
Be as most explicit as possible so people can understand you needs best.
Hope I can help
:)

My problem is slightly different...

I get it to boot and install, then upon reboot it hangs on:

dosdev= 80, biosdrive = 0, unit = 0, maj = 0
|

This is as far as it erver gets...  Any ideas?

What is the boot command it is using?  Ie, 0:wd0(0,a)/kernel
(or what ever).

1. Lamer Newbie Filesystem Question

I have a solaris 2.8 system, the / partition is too small, and I would
like to put /usr and /var their own partitions (its all one big
partition now). I've added a 2nd disk, made partitions/filesystems, and
everything is good so far. But now I'm not sure how to actually move the
files to the new partitions. I tried cp -Rp, but it ran into problems
with fifo's, /var/run and /usr/lib/32..... mv had the same problems. I
didn't find much info in the FAQ, sunhelp.org, google or the answerbook.

One thing I did find suggested using ufsdump to copy the files to a
tape, then restore them to the new partition. I don't have a tapedrive,
but I could borrow one. However, will ufsdump really work on just a
subdirectory on a partition? I thought it only worked on whole
filesystems.

Thanks for any pointers.
