/var/log/mgetty.cuaa1 grows up

Post by Carsten Huet » Fri, 29 Jan 1999 04:00:00

Hello,

While checking up my system I found that the log file
/var/log/mgetty.cuaa1 grows up rapidely. Is has reached a size now
over 850 MB and is still growing...

It seems, because modem is not turned on all the time mgetty writes
all errors to this files.

What shall I do?
How do I disable logging of mgetty?
How do I decreased the size of /var/log/mgetty.cuaa1?
Remove?

TIA
C.

This is usually due to a flaky serial port - when the DTR line is dropped the port
should be silent and gettys suspended.  Some ports don't, though, and getty just
keeps banging out a loing prompt.

You might try unplugging the modem in addition to turning it off and see what
happens.

I think you can compile mgetty with syslog logging, so log files can be
tuned.

1. why does /var/adm/wtmp grow and grow and grow ...

Please help: the file /var/adm/wtmp grow endlessly.
I have reset it last on Oct 11 but it already grew up to two megabytes
again. I looked at virtually every file in /etc, but I still haven't the
slightest clue why this happens.

Kernel 1.1.45 on MCC distrib. if that matters.

Help greatly appreciated. Bye,
