FreeBSD 4.0 : XFree86 4.0?

Post by Lewis W Bear » Tue, 21 Mar 2000 04:00:00

All,

Does FreeBSD come with XFree86 4.0, or should I just grab and install that
seperately?

Also, while I'm at it, does the 4.0-RELEASE stuff match what will be on the
shipped 4.0 cd? I want to install freebsd 4.0 release NOW, but I also wanna
order the cd as well.

if it's in the 4.0 release directory at ftp.freebsd.org , i would
assume that it is on the cd.  i do believe it comes with xfree86 4.0,
but from what i've heard, the new xfree doesn't like se virge dgx
cards,so i'm gonna wait about gettin the new xfree.

I just got off my rear end and realized I could just ftp over and
look. It seems that Freebsd 4.0 Release has its X link to xfree
3.3.6 or some such.

Yes, AFAICT it does.

If you've picked the most recent 4.0-RELEASE stuff (i've just read an
announcement by Jordan that he had to re-roll the release for a second
time), yes, supposedly.

No, XFree86 3.3.6.

You should read the XFree86 4.0 release notes and decide carefully
whether you want to install it yet or stay with the latest 3.3
version for the time being.

Yes.

Too bad.  Jordan was considering the inclusion of XFree86 4.0, but
apparently didn't have enough time to complete it without delaying
FreeBSD 4.0 too much...  I stand corrected.

But if you want XFree86 4.0 I suggest installing FreeBSD 4.0 without X and
then install XFree864.0 from the ports. It worked fine for me...

So the binaries shipped are 3.3.6 but the ports are set up to grab and
install 4.0? Hmm.

I have a TNT2 card, so I definitely want 4.0 for the accelerated
driver (I *think* I read thats available in 4.0). I wonder if 3.3.6
has it?

Almost right, there is in fact two ports for XFree86 3.3.6 _and_ 4.0.

There only exists a accelerated 2d driver for TNT2 (I got a TNT
myself) and there seems to be some problems with the nvidia 3d driver
(binary only and not supporting DRI, from what I've heard lately).

I think 2D acceleration is all I need ... just so my Xwindows standard
stuff isnt sluggish. Is the accelerated 2D TNT driver in 3.3.6 or 4.0?

Hmm ... I guess I could dig around myself and find out, but sometimes
I have a hard time reconciling what the fact sheets say with what reality
is, so I prefer to get the info from someone who is in fact using what
I'm asking about! :)

And thanks to all for the comments and help (on this and other issues I
have posted on).

No, there are two ports:
- XFree86
- XFree86-4

Have you looked at the XFree86-4.0 release notes? Some chipsets
that were supported in 3.3 aren't yet in 4.0, some others only
without acceleration--the whole thing is decidedly unfinished and
work-in-progress.

There is a 2d accelerated server called nv (for nVidia) and it works great
for me (can't say that I need a faster one for my needs in 2d) and my TNT
so I suppose it won't be bad with a TNT2.

Well, I suppose I should try it with enlightenment to push it hard in but
I'm a windowmaker * :)

sure thing, such things can be hard to find. (sometimes)

No, but i've been watching their 4.0 development for years now...

Sure, everything's in progress, isn't it? :)  They haven't got enough
people motivated to port any and all of the old drivers to the new
architecture within the last couple of years, so i doubt there's any
hope that it will happen in future (unless by pushing out the release,
some `innocent bystander' might now pop up helping out with this).  My
bet is that most of what's unsupported now will never be supported
again in future (well, at least regarding chipsets, not regarding
features like missing acceleration of course).

Also, FreeBSD 4.0 is supposed to be `new technology', so i can assure
you this definately wouldn't have been the show-stopper.  Jordan
considered bundling XFree86 4.0, but since that has only been released
one week before the decided FreeBSD 4.0 date, time was too tight.

1. KStatusBar core dump - XFree86 4.0 + FreeBSD 4.0

Using kdevelop and a simple test application: clicking on File -> Close
results in a core dump.

The back trace looks as follows:

(gdb) bt

#1  0x281304f3 in KStatusBar::changeItem () from /usr/local/lib/libkdeui.so.3

#4  0x80533a9 in KtestApp::commandCallback (this=0x807db00, id_=10090)

Similar core dumps when exiting a KDE app happen at other places too.
